The 4 Stages of Dental Implant Treatment in Nottingham - image

There’s no doubt that losing teeth can cause a lot of problems, not only damaging your lovely smile but ruining your confidence and making it more difficult to do the simplest of things like chewing your food properly. The solution for many people is to have dental implants.

These look, feel and work like your real teeth and can make a big difference to your life and how you feel about yourself. Here, the Same Day Teeth Suite in the East Midlands outlines the various stages in dental implant treatment.

→ Stage 1: Consultation and Treatment Planning

For such an important treatment like dental implants you will need a full clinical examination. The dentist will take x-rays of your mouth to assess your teeth and also the bone structure where the implants are going to be placed.

At this time you might well have a CT scan which gives a more detailed picture of the area being treated. For a very few people, there is not enough bone or it is not healthy enough to put implants into – there are options to consider if this is the case, including grafting bone onto the treatment area first.

During this initial phase you will also receive your individual quote and choose your ideal payment plan.

→ Stage 2: The Placement of Dental Implants

Dental implants are inserted into the healthy bone, a procedure that is performed either under a local anaesthetic or after intravenous sedation. If there is not enough bone available to accommodate the implant, an augmentation procedure may be required that covers up the implant and helps to integrate it with the jaw bone.

Once fitted, it takes about 3 to 6 months for the implants to heal under the gums. This is a vital part of the process and it is important that the implants are not put under direct stress as the implant attaches to the bone in a process known as osseointegration.

→ Stage 3: Exposure of Dental Implants and Attachment of Abutment

Once the dental implants have healed properly, they are exposed and the abutment or post attached to them. These implants are the foundation for your new teeth and now is the time for the dentist to take impressions to construct either an individual crown, bridge or denture.

→ Stage 4: Construction of a Crown, Bridge or Denture

Once the crown, bridge or denture is made they can be fitted to the implant and the process is complete.

Both the dental implant and restorative phases can be done in as little as 8 weeks or up to 6 to 9 months depending on what treatment is being undertaken.

If the bone quality of the jaw is good, there is a method now available called ‘teeth in a day’. You will have one or two visits with an oral surgeon, prosthodontist and restorative dentist who will get together the right information for your treatment plan. They may well do a 3D CT scan, take x-rays, jaw relation records, impressions and photos.

After the consultation you are then scheduled for surgery implantation and the new teeth are fitted and adjusted all in one session while you are under sedation.

Following a period of recovery, your replacement teeth will function as your natural ones did and you will be able to eat as normal.

There are a number of options available if you require dental implants and the best thing to do is talk to your dentist to find out which is best for you. At the Same Day Teeth Suite in Nottingham, Leicester and Loughborough you can get all the advice you need to make the right decision about your teeth and how to restore that nice white smile.
